A Pane alternative with flows, checks and a team kanban
Pane, also called RunPane, from Dcouple, is a free, keyboard-first desktop app for running coding agents in parallel, open source under AGPL-3.0. Anything that runs in a terminal runs in Pane, so Claude Code, Codex, Cursor Agent, OpenCode, Aider, Goose or another CLI works without an integration. Each pane is one feature with its own git worktree and branch, and inside it agents, diffs, files, git and terminals sit in tabs. A Pane Chat orchestrator and the runpane CLI let agents create panes and start other agents, and Remote Pane runs agents on your own machine while you follow them from another desktop or a phone browser. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, including projects inside WSL. AgentVera runs agent CLIs in real terminals side by side, and adds flows, acceptance checks and team tools. Below is how they differ and where Pane is the better fit.
Pane and AgentVera side by side
| Feature | Pane | AgentVera |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Windows (x64 and ARM64, including projects in WSL), macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux (x64 and ARM64 AppImage and .deb); a browser app at runpane.com/app connects to a self-hosted Remote Pane from a phone or tablet. | macOS, Windows and Linux desktop app. |
| Supported agents | Any CLI agent that runs in a terminal, with no integration needed; its README names Claude Code, Codex, Cursor Agent, OpenCode, Aider and Goose. | 18 CLI coding agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Cursor Agent, opencode, Amp and Aider, plus plain terminals. Each uses its own CLI install and login. |
| Open source / license | Open source, AGPL-3.0, with added terms that require a visible attribution to Dcouple in the app. | Closed source. |
| Pricing model | Free: no paid plan, seat fee or usage fee, the self-hosted Remote Pane included. | Free plan with unlimited agents; Pro and Team plans are paid. |
| Git worktrees | Yes. Each pane is one feature with its own worktree and branch; Pane creates and cleans them up, rebases from main with a shortcut, copies .env files into new worktrees and gives each pane its own port range. | Yes. Create a worktree per task from the Git panel and start an agent in it; night-shift tasks get their own worktree. You are warned when two agents edit the same file. |
| Kanban | not confirmed | Team kanban shared across your organization; hand a card to Claude, Codex or another agent and the reply lands on the card (Pro and Team). |
| Flows and pipelines between agents | Pane Chat, an orchestrator terminal, coordinates Claude, Codex or Cursor across panes; through the runpane CLI and MCP tools agents create panes, start agents and hand a task to another machine; Loops run an agent on a cron schedule. | Flows pass one agent’s output to the next; a team view of open agents led by a manager; a parallel team that ends in one PR; staged task line; night shift (Pro and Team). |
| Acceptance checks | not confirmed | Verify extracts acceptance criteria from your request and a separate read-only verifier checks each one after the agent’s turn; automatic code review. |
| Database manager / SSH | Lists the hosts in your SSH config and opens an ssh terminal in one click; Remote Pane runs agents on your own machine over Tailscale or SSH. We did not find a database manager. | Database manager for PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB and SQLite (Pro and Team); SSH/SFTP panel; agent SSH and database access with your rules. |
| Token savings | not confirmed | Context profiles, automatic /compact, bundled RTK output compression, automatic per-task model routing and a project map (code graph) for agents. |
| Team features | not confirmed | Organizations, team kanban, client boards, AgentVera Runner on your own server, automatic account switching. |
A dash means we could not confirm the feature on Pane’s own pages. It may exist or arrive later; check their site.
When to pick Pane
- You want a free, open-source (AGPL-3.0) app with no paid plan, the self-hosted remote daemon included.
- You want any terminal agent to work on day one, in a keyboard-first app where a new pane, its worktree and a rebase are one shortcut away.
- You use a Windows on Arm PC or keep projects inside WSL, or want agents on your own server that you follow from a phone browser.
- You want agents to manage the workspace themselves through the runpane CLI and MCP tools, ask you questions with Notify, or hand a task to another of your machines.
When to pick AgentVera
- You want 18 CLIs (from Gemini CLI and Copilot to Amp and Aider) ready to launch in real terminals, side by side in a grid.
- You want flows that pass one agent’s output to the next, a team view led by a manager, a parallel team that ends in one PR, and night shift.
- You want acceptance checks (Verify) after each turn, automatic code review and a warning when two agents edit the same file.
- You want a team kanban, organizations, automatic account switching, a database manager and an SSH/SFTP panel in the same app.
Moving from Pane to AgentVera
- Download AgentVera and open the repositories you use in Pane.
- Add Claude Code, Codex, Cursor Agent, opencode or Aider. AgentVera starts the CLIs you already installed, so your logins and subscriptions carry over.
- Pane worktrees are ordinary git worktrees: open them from the Git panel, or merge them and archive the panes first.
- To follow agents away from your desk, use the AgentVera mobile app or Telegram; to keep them running on a server, install AgentVera Runner there.
