A Herdr alternative with flows, checks and a team kanban

Herdr is a free, open-source (Apache-2.0) app for running terminals and coding agents. Agents run in herdr-core, a small server on your machine, so they keep working when you close the window; an agents sidebar shows which ones are working, blocked or done, and agents can drive Herdr themselves, start helper agents and add machines over SSH. It comes as a desktop app for macOS, Linux and Windows, next to the original Herdr TUI. AgentVera also runs agent CLIs in real terminals, and adds flows, acceptance checks and team tools. Below is how they differ and where Herdr is the better fit.

Herdr and AgentVera side by side

FeatureHerdrAgentVera
Platforms macOS (Apple Silicon builds; Intel from source), Linux (x86-64 and ARM64, with Vulkan) and Windows (x64, Windows 10 1803 or later); the Herdr TUI runs in a terminal. macOS, Windows and Linux desktop app.
Supported agents Any agent that runs in a terminal; agents that support the OSC 7501 status signal also report whether they are working, blocked or done. 18 CLI coding agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Cursor Agent, opencode, Amp and Aider, plus plain terminals. Each uses its own CLI install and login.
Open source / license Open source, Apache-2.0 (app, herdr-core and Herdr TUI). Closed source.
Pricing model Free; no paid plan is listed. Free plan with unlimited agents; Pro and Team plans are paid.
Git worktrees Yes. Ask your agent to open a worktree for an issue, and Herdr adds a space for the branch under its repository with the agent already on it. Yes. Create a worktree per task from the Git panel and start an agent in it; night-shift tasks get their own worktree. You are warned when two agents edit the same file.
Kanban not confirmed Team kanban shared across your organization; hand a card to Claude, Codex or another agent and the reply lands on the card (Pro and Team).
Flows and pipelines between agents An agent can start helper agents, send them messages and collect their reports; agents can also drive Herdr through its CLI. Flows pass one agent’s output to the next; a team view of open agents led by a manager; a parallel team that ends in one PR; staged task line; night shift (Pro and Team).
Acceptance checks not confirmed Verify extracts acceptance criteria from your request and a separate read-only verifier checks each one after the agent’s turn; automatic code review.
Database manager / SSH Add any machine you reach over SSH (a server, VM or cloud sandbox); its spaces run there and keep running while your laptop sleeps. No database manager. Database manager for PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB and SQLite (Pro and Team); SSH/SFTP panel; agent SSH and database access with your rules.
Token savings not confirmed Context profiles, automatic /compact, bundled RTK output compression, automatic per-task model routing and a project map (code graph) for agents.
Team features not confirmed Organizations, team kanban, client boards, AgentVera Runner on your own server, automatic account switching.

A dash means we could not confirm the feature on Herdr’s own pages. It may exist or arrive later; check their site.

When to pick Herdr

  • You want a free, open-source (Apache-2.0) tool, with a desktop app or a terminal multiplexer (TUI).
  • You want agents to keep running in a background server when you close the window, and on remote machines while your laptop sleeps.
  • You want your agent to arrange Herdr itself: layouts, sidebar, keys and themes are plain files it can edit.
  • You want any terminal agent to run, with live status from agents that support OSC 7501.

When to pick AgentVera

  • You want ready-made handoffs between agents: flows, a team view led by a manager, a parallel team that ends in one PR, night shift.
  • You want acceptance checks (Verify) after each turn, automatic code review and a warning when two agents edit the same file.
  • You want a team kanban whose cards you hand to Claude, Codex or another agent.
  • You want automatic account switching at a limit, token savings, a database manager and an SSH/SFTP panel in the same app.

Moving from Herdr to AgentVera

  1. Download AgentVera and open the repository behind your Herdr spaces as a project.
  2. Add the agents you ran in Herdr. AgentVera starts the CLIs you already installed, so your logins and subscriptions carry over.
  3. Worktrees from Herdr spaces are ordinary git worktrees: open them from the Git panel, or merge and remove them first.
  4. Recreate helper-agent work as flows or a parallel team; for agents on a server, use AgentVera Runner or the SSH panel.

Questions

Is Herdr free?

Yes. Herdr is free and open source under Apache-2.0, and its pages list no paid plan. AgentVera has a free plan with unlimited agents; Pro and Team are paid.

Is Herdr a tmux replacement?

The original Herdr TUI is a terminal multiplexer for agents, and the newer desktop app keeps agents in herdr-core so they survive closing the window. AgentVera is a desktop app where each agent runs in its own terminal.

Does Herdr work over SSH?

Yes. You add any machine reachable over SSH, and its spaces and agents show in the same sidebar. AgentVera has an SSH/SFTP panel, and AgentVera Runner runs agents on your own server.

Is AgentVera open source like Herdr?

No. AgentVera is a closed-source desktop app with a free plan. Herdr is open source under Apache-2.0.

Can I use Herdr and AgentVera on the same repository?

Yes. Both run the same agent CLIs on plain git branches and worktrees, so you can try AgentVera without changing your Herdr setup.
