The Claude desktop app (Code tab) and AgentVera compared
The Code tab in Anthropic’s Claude desktop app is Claude Code with a graphical interface, for macOS, Windows and Linux (beta). It runs several sessions side by side, each optionally in its own git worktree, with diff review, an integrated terminal, a preview browser, pull request monitoring and cloud or SSH sessions; it needs a paid Claude plan. If Claude Code is the only agent you use, it is the natural choice. AgentVera is an independent desktop app that runs the same Claude Code CLI, plus Codex and other agent CLIs, in real terminals, with flows, a team kanban and account switching around them. Both work on the same repository, so you can use them together.
Claude desktop app (Code tab) and AgentVera side by side
| Feature | Claude desktop app (Code tab) | AgentVera |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | macOS (universal build for Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows (x64 and ARM64) and Linux in beta (apt or .deb for Ubuntu and Debian). Sessions run locally, in Anthropic’s cloud, over SSH or, on Windows, in WSL 2. | macOS, Windows and Linux desktop app. |
| Supported agents | Claude Code only, with Claude models; the app includes Claude Code, so no separate CLI install is needed. The Code tab can also run on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry or a self-hosted gateway. | 18 CLI coding agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Cursor Agent, opencode, Amp and Aider, plus plain terminals. Each uses its own CLI install and login. |
| Open source / license | Proprietary. Claude Code’s own repository is marked “All rights reserved” under Anthropic’s Commercial Terms of Service. | Closed source. |
| Pricing model | The Code tab needs a Pro, Max, Ultra, Team or Enterprise plan: Pro $20/month ($17 billed yearly), Max $100, Ultra $200, Team from $20 per seat. Usage counts toward the plan, shared across Claude Code surfaces. | Free plan with unlimited agents; Pro and Team plans are paid. |
| Git worktrees | Yes, optional per session: turn on Worktree before you start and the session runs in an isolated git worktree under .claude/worktrees/. It is off by default. | Yes. Create a worktree per task from the Git panel and start an agent in it; night-shift tasks get their own worktree. You are warned when two agents edit the same file. |
| Kanban | not confirmed | Team kanban shared across your organization; hand a card to Claude, Codex or another agent and the reply lands on the card (Pro and Team). |
| Flows and pipelines between agents | Sessions can list, read and message each other; a tasks pane shows subagents and background commands; scheduled tasks; Dispatch in Cowork can start Code sessions (Pro, Max and Ultra). Agent teams are a CLI feature that Desktop does not have. | Flows pass one agent’s output to the next; a team view of open agents led by a manager; a parallel team that ends in one PR; staged task line; night shift (Pro and Team). |
| Acceptance checks | Diff view with line comments; /code-review with Apply fixes; after a pull request, Auto-fix handles failing CI and new review comments and Merge when ready turns on GitHub auto-merge. Claude can check its changes in the preview browser. | Verify extracts acceptance criteria from your request and a separate read-only verifier checks each one after the agent’s turn; automatic code review. |
| Database manager / SSH | SSH sessions on your own servers, cloud VMs or dev containers; Desktop installs Claude Code on the remote machine the first time you connect. | Database manager for PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB and SQLite (Pro and Team); SSH/SFTP panel; agent SSH and database access with your rules. |
| Token savings | not confirmed | Context profiles, automatic /compact, bundled RTK output compression, automatic per-task model routing and a project map (code graph) for agents. |
| Team features | Team and Enterprise: admin console controls for Desktop, cloud sessions and Remote Control, managed settings, required SSO, and deployment through MDM or the MSIX package. | Organizations, team kanban, client boards, AgentVera Runner on your own server, automatic account switching. |

When to pick Claude desktop app (Code tab)
- Claude Code is the only agent you use, and you want Anthropic’s own app with nothing to set up beyond your Claude sign-in.
- You want cloud sessions that keep running after you close the app, and Remote Control from claude.ai or the Claude mobile app.
- You want a preview browser where Claude checks its own changes, and pull request monitoring that fixes failing CI and merges when ready.
- Your organization already runs Claude Team or Enterprise and wants admin console and policy controls for the app.
When to pick AgentVera
- You use more than Claude: AgentVera runs Claude Code next to Codex, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Cursor Agent and others, 18 CLIs in all, each with its own login.
- You want agents to hand work to each other: flows, a team view led by a manager, a parallel team that ends in one PR, night shift.
- You hit usage limits and want the agent to move to the next Claude or Codex account in a chain on its own (Pro and Team).
- You want a team kanban whose cards you hand to an agent, an MCP manager for every CLI, a database manager and an SSH/SFTP panel in one app.
Moving from Claude desktop app (Code tab) to AgentVera
- Download AgentVera and open the project folder you use in the Code tab.
- Install the Claude Code CLI if you do not have it yet and sign in with the same Claude account; AgentVera starts it in a real terminal, so no API key is needed.
- Desktop and the CLI read the same configuration files, so your CLAUDE.md, MCP servers, hooks, skills and settings carry over.
- Worktrees under .claude/worktrees/ are ordinary git worktrees: open them from the Git panel. Add Codex or other agents next to Claude when you need them.
Questions
Is AgentVera the same as Claude Code Desktop?
No. Claude Code Desktop is the Code tab in Anthropic’s Claude desktop app. AgentVera is an independent app, not affiliated with Anthropic, that runs the Claude Code CLI you install, next to other agent CLIs.
Can I use the Claude desktop app and AgentVera together?
Yes. AgentVera runs the same Claude Code CLI, which reads the same CLAUDE.md, settings, skills and MCP configuration as Desktop. Both work on plain git branches and worktrees, and both draw on the same Claude plan.
Does the Code tab need a paid plan?
Yes. Claude Code requires a Pro, Max, Ultra, Team or Enterprise plan. AgentVera has a free plan with unlimited agents, but the Claude Code CLI inside it still signs in with your own Claude account.
Does the Claude desktop app switch accounts at the usage limit?
We did not find automatic account switching in its docs; plan usage is shared across all Claude Code surfaces. AgentVera can move an agent to the next Claude or Codex account in a chain when one runs low (Pro and Team).
Is AgentVera open source?
No. AgentVera is a closed-source desktop app with a free plan. The Claude desktop app is proprietary as well.
