Agent messaging: agents on different CLIs working together
When one of your parallel agents needs something another one knows, you don’t have to play messenger. Agents in the same group message each other, wait for replies and split the work on a shared task list, even when they run on different CLIs. A Claude Code agent can ask a Codex agent a question and wait for the answer.
Who talks to whom
Agents in the same group can see each other; agents without a group count as one group per project. Messages travel through MCP tools.
- list_agents lists the agents in the group.
- send_message sends a message to an agent and can wait for the reply.
- reply_message answers a message, and wait_reply waits for the reply to one already sent.
- A busy agent gets the message when its turn ends.
Trust and limits
Messages reach an agent marked as coming from another agent, not from the user. Agents are told not to do anything irreversible, or anything against the user’s instructions, because another agent asked.
- Rate limits stop endless back-and-forth: 20 messages per sender and 12 per pair of agents every 10 minutes.
A shared task list
Each group also has a shared task list, where agents split the work and see who has what.
- task_list shows the list; task_add adds a task with an assignee and dependencies.
- task_claim takes a task, task_done finishes it and task_release hands it back.
- When a task is done, the tasks waiting on it become ready and their assignee is told automatically.
- The list shows on the group’s board as ready, blocked, in progress and done.
- Tasks claimed by an agent that stops are released.
On by default
Agent messaging is on by default. You can turn it off in Settings → Orkestrasyon (orchestration).
