# Best Cursor alternatives in 2026: 10 tools compared

URL: https://agentvera.dev/en/blog/best-cursor-alternatives/ · Published: 2026-10-28

The best Cursor alternatives in 2026: Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, Zed, Cline, Kiro, Aider, Gemini CLI and AgentVera, with prices and who each fits.

**In short:**

- To stay in an editor, the closest Cursor alternatives are GitHub Copilot in VS Code, Windsurf (now Devin Desktop), Zed and Kiro. For a terminal agent, look at Claude Code, Codex, Copilot CLI, Aider or Cline.
- Pricing models differ: Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan, Codex is included in ChatGPT plans, Zed, Cline and Aider are free with your own API keys or agents, and Kiro and Copilot have free tiers.
- You do not have to give Cursor up completely: Cursor CLI runs in a terminal, so a desktop app like AgentVera can run it next to Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI in one project.

**The best Cursor alternatives in 2026 are GitHub Copilot, Windsurf (now Devin Desktop), Zed and Kiro if you want an AI editor, and Claude Code, Codex, Aider, Cline and Gemini CLI if you would rather run an agent in the terminal next to the editor you already use.** No single tool replaces every part of Cursor; pick by what you actually used Cursor for: tab completion, the agent, model choice or cloud agents. If you want to keep Cursor’s agent and add others, AgentVera runs Cursor CLI side by side with the rest.

Below: ten tools, their strengths, limits and prices as of October 2026. No benchmark scores; results depend on your repo and prompts more than on a leaderboard. If you are only choosing between Cursor and Claude Code, [Claude Code vs Cursor](/en/blog/claude-code-vs-cursor/ "Claude Code vs Cursor") goes deeper on that pair.

## Why people look for a Cursor alternative

The common reasons, in no particular order:

- **Pricing and usage.** Cursor’s plans include model usage at a rate that depends on the model you pick. Some people would rather use a Claude or ChatGPT subscription they already pay for, or their own API keys.
- **Editor lock-in.** Cursor is a VS Code fork. People who use JetBrains, Neovim, Zed or plain terminals want an agent that does not require switching editors.
- **One model vendor’s harness.** Claude Code and Codex are built by the companies that train the models, and some people prefer that tuning.

## Claude Code

**What it is.** Anthropic’s coding agent. You run `claude` in a project folder, describe a task, and it plans, edits files, runs tests and asks before risky steps. The same agent is available in VS Code and JetBrains extensions, a desktop app and on the web.

```bash
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
cd my-project && claude
```

**Strengths.** The harness is tuned by the company that trains the model. It has the largest set of extension points among terminal agents: [hooks](/en/glossary/claude-code-hooks/ "What are Claude Code hooks"), skills, custom subagents, plugins and MCP. `claude -p` makes it scriptable for CI.

**Limits.** Claude models only, no tab completion of its own, and subscription use runs on rolling usage windows.

**Pricing (as of October 2026).** Not included in Claude Free. It comes with every paid plan: Pro at $20/month ($17/month billed annually), Max from $100/month, Team and Enterprise seats, or pay-per-token with an API key.

**Fits:** people who already pay for Claude and want the agent rather than the editor.

## OpenAI Codex

**What it is.** OpenAI’s coding agent, available as a CLI, an IDE extension, a desktop app and a cloud version that share one sign-in. [How to use Codex CLI](/en/blog/how-to-use-codex-cli/ "How to use Codex CLI") walks through setup.

```bash
npm install -g @openai/codex
codex
```

**Strengths.** Real OS-level sandboxing (Seatbelt on macOS, bubblewrap on Linux, a native sandbox on Windows), clear approval modes, `codex exec` for automation and `codex review` for reviewing uncommitted changes. It reads `AGENTS.md`, the same rules file Cursor reads.

**Limits.** OpenAI models only, and no editor or inline completions of its own.

**Pricing (as of October 2026).** Included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise, with limits that grow with the plan. API keys are billed per token.

**Fits:** people already on a ChatGPT plan, and anyone who wants a free way to try a serious agent.

## GitHub Copilot (VS Code agent mode and Copilot CLI)

**What it is.** Copilot is the AI built into VS Code and other editors, with an agent mode that edits across files and runs commands. Copilot CLI brings the same agent to the terminal.

```bash
npm install -g @github/copilot
copilot
```

On macOS and Linux you can also use `brew install --cask copilot-cli`, and on Windows `winget install GitHub.Copilot`.

**Strengths.** You stay in stock VS Code with its full extension marketplace. Tight GitHub integration, and on paid plans a cloud agent and code review. Copilot offers models from several vendors.

**Limits.** The cloud agent and code review are not in the free plan. Business and Enterprise pricing goes through GitHub sales.

**Pricing (as of October 2026).** Free includes 2,000 inline suggestions a month and limited chat and agent use, and it supports Copilot CLI and agent mode. Pro is $10/month, Pro+ $39/month and Max $100/month. Usage is measured in GitHub AI Credits. [Copilot CLI vs Claude Code](/en/blog/copilot-cli-vs-claude-code/ "Copilot CLI vs Claude Code") compares the two terminal agents.

**Fits:** people who liked Cursor’s inline experience but want to be back on plain VS Code.

## Windsurf (now Devin Desktop)

**What it is.** Windsurf was one of Cursor’s closest competitors: an AI editor with an agent built in. Cognition, the company behind Devin, acquired it and has renamed it Devin Desktop; windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai. The local agent is called Devin Local, and the app can also manage Devin cloud sessions.

**Strengths.** It is the most direct editor-for-editor swap on this list. During onboarding you can import settings and keybindings from VS Code or Cursor. Builds exist for macOS, Windows and Linux (deb, rpm and tarball).

**Limits.** Not every VS Code extension works: the docs say extensions from other marketplaces cannot be installed and some are incompatible. The rename is recent, so older guides and screenshots still say Windsurf and Cascade.

**Pricing (as of October 2026).** You need a Devin account, which is free to create; usage is counted in credits, and Devin’s paid plans start at $20/month.

**Fits:** Cursor users who want the same shape of product from another vendor.

## Zed

**What it is.** A fast, GPL-3.0 licensed code editor written in Rust. Its agent panel runs Zed’s own agent plus external agents over the Agent Client Protocol (ACP): Claude, Codex, Copilot, Cursor, OpenCode, Gemini CLI and more from the ACP Registry. Run `zed: acp registry` from the command palette to add one.

**Strengths.** Very fast editing, several agent threads at once, optional git worktree per thread and remote development over SSH. Zed does not charge for external agents.

**Limits.** A smaller extension ecosystem than VS Code. Agents run through the ACP integration rather than in their own terminal UI.

**Pricing (as of October 2026).** Personal is free, including unlimited use with your own API keys or external agents. Pro is $10/month with Zed-hosted models; Business is $30 per seat per month. More detail in [AgentVera vs Zed](/en/alternatives/zed/ "AgentVera vs Zed").

**Fits:** people who want to leave the VS Code family and still have agents next to their code.

## Cline

**What it is.** An autonomous coding agent that started as a VS Code extension and now also has a CLI. You bring API keys from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google or other providers. It has Plan and Act modes, and it can be used as an ACP agent in Zed, JetBrains IDEs and Neovim.

```bash
npm i -g cline
cline -p    # start in Plan mode
```

**Strengths.** Full model choice, no seat fee for individuals, and every action is visible and approvable. It keeps checkpoints so you can roll back a step.

**Limits.** You manage your own API spend, which can climb on long tasks with large models. The JetBrains extension is listed under Enterprise.

**Pricing (as of October 2026).** Free for individual developers; you pay your model provider directly. Enterprise is custom.

**Fits:** people who want to stay in VS Code but pick any model and see every step.

## Kiro

**What it is.** An AI IDE and CLI from AWS built around spec-driven development: you agree on requirements and a design with the agent before it writes code. The IDE runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and Kiro CLI is a terminal agent:

```bash
curl -fsSL https://cli.kiro.dev/install | bash
kiro-cli
```

**Strengths.** Structure for larger features, one subscription across the IDE, CLI, web and ACP-compatible editors, and a free tier.

**Limits.** Usage runs on credits, so heavy days use them faster. The spec-first workflow adds steps that feel slow for small fixes.

**Pricing (as of October 2026).** Free with 50 credits; Pro $20/month (1,000 credits), Pro+ $40, Pro Max $100 and Power $200 per user.

**Fits:** teams who want the agent to plan in writing before it codes.

## Aider

**What it is.** One of the earliest terminal pair-programming tools. Aider maps your repository, edits files and commits each change to git with a descriptive message. [How to use Aider](/en/blog/how-to-use-aider/ "How to use Aider") has a full walkthrough.

```bash
python -m pip install aider-install
aider-install
cd my-project
aider --model sonnet --api-key anthropic=<key>
```

**Strengths.** Works with almost any LLM, including local models. Automatic commits make every change easy to diff and undo. Watch mode lets you write instructions as comments in your editor and Aider acts on them. Apache-2.0 licensed.

**Limits.** A plainer interface, and you manage API keys and spend yourself.

**Pricing.** Free; you pay whichever model provider you connect.

**Fits:** git-minded developers who want model freedom and a light tool.

## Gemini CLI

**What it is.** Google’s Apache-2.0 licensed terminal agent. [How to use Gemini CLI](/en/blog/how-to-use-gemini-cli/ "How to use Gemini CLI") covers the details.

```bash
npm install -g @google/gemini-cli
gemini
```

**Strengths.** Large context windows, Google Search grounding, MCP support, and sign-in with a Gemini API key or Vertex AI for Google Cloud users.

**Limits.** An important change in 2026: according to the project’s README, for unpaid-tier and Google One users Gemini CLI was replaced by Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026, and Google points to Antigravity for its newest Gemini model. Check which sign-in you have before you build a workflow on it.

**Pricing.** Free to install; usage depends on your Google account, API key or Vertex AI billing.

**Fits:** teams on Google Cloud or with Gemini API access. Personal users may land on Antigravity instead.

## AgentVera

**What it is.** A desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux that runs terminal coding agents in real terminals, in a grid, with each CLI’s own login. It is not an editor and it does not replace Cursor’s tab completion. It runs 18 CLI agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Copilot CLI, Kiro CLI, Cline, Aider and [Cursor CLI](/en/agents/cursor-agent/ "Cursor in AgentVera") itself.

**Strengths.** It answers “how do I use several of these at once” rather than “which one replaces Cursor”. You get a [workspace grid](/en/features/workspace/ "Workspace") from 1×1 to 5×4 panels, git worktrees per agent, [automatic code review](/en/features/code-review/ "Code review") when a turn ends, an MCP manager that attaches your servers at launch, and account switching when a limit runs out.

**Limits.** No editor and no inline completions; you keep using VS Code, Zed, JetBrains or Cursor for editing. You still need each agent’s own subscription or key. Flows between agents are on the Pro and Team plans.

**Pricing.** A free plan with unlimited agents; Pro and Team are paid. See [pricing](/en/pricing/ "AgentVera pricing").

**Fits:** people who do not want to bet on one agent, or who already pay for two.

## How to choose

Answer these in order:

1. **Do you want an editor or an agent?** If you loved Cursor’s inline diffs and tab completion, look at Copilot in VS Code, Devin Desktop, Zed or Kiro. If you mostly used the agent panel, a terminal agent will feel familiar fast.
2. **Which subscription do you already pay for?** Claude plan: Claude Code. ChatGPT plan: Codex. GitHub plan: Copilot. None: Zed, Cline or Aider with your own keys, or a free tier.
3. **Do you need model choice?** Cline, Aider, Zed and Copilot let you switch vendors. Claude Code and Codex stay with their own models.
4. **How do you want to review changes?** Inline in an editor, as git commits (Aider), or as a diff after each turn.
5. **Will you run more than one agent?** Then plan for [git worktrees](/en/blog/git-worktree-parallel-agents/ "Git worktrees for parallel agents") from day one.

## Moving off Cursor without losing your setup

Most of what you built in Cursor carries over if you move it to shared files:

1. **Rules.** Cursor reads `.cursor/rules/*.mdc` and `AGENTS.md`. Move everything that does not need globs into `AGENTS.md`; Codex, Copilot, Cursor CLI and many others read it. For Claude Code, make `CLAUDE.md` a one-line import:

   ```markdown
   @AGENTS.md
   ```

   [CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md](/en/blog/claude-md-agents-md/ "CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md") explains what belongs in the file.

2. **MCP servers.** Copy the servers from `.cursor/mcp.json` into the new tool. In Codex that is one command per server:

   ```bash
   codex mcp add context7 -- npx -y @upstash/context7-mcp
   ```

3. **Settings and keybindings.** Devin Desktop can import them from Cursor during onboarding. For Zed, set up keymaps by hand.
4. **Try before you switch.** Run the new agent on a real task in a separate worktree while Cursor stays installed:

   ```bash
   git worktree add ../myapp-trial -b trial/claude
   cd ../myapp-trial && claude
   ```

   Compare the diff with what Cursor would have done, then decide.

## Running Cursor CLI next to the alternatives in AgentVera

You do not have to choose one. Cursor CLI runs in a terminal (`agent`, or `cursor-agent` on older installs), so AgentVera can run it as one agent in the grid next to Claude Code or Codex:

- **One project, several agents.** Open a Cursor agent and a Claude Code agent in the same project grid. Each Cursor agent gets its own chat and returns to it after a restart.
- **Separate folders.** Pick a worktree in the New agent dialog so agents never edit the same checkout. The [Git panel](/en/features/git-and-github/ "Git and GitHub") shows each branch.
- **A second opinion.** Automatic code review lets one agent check what another changed before you merge.
- **Hand-offs.** [Flows](/en/features/flows/ "Flows") pass one agent’s answer to the next, for example Cursor plans and Claude Code implements (Pro and Team).

One honest limit: Cursor CLI has no extra-instructions flag, so put lasting instructions in `AGENTS.md` or `.cursor/rules`. For a broader look at multi-agent tools, see [best tools for parallel AI coding agents](/en/blog/best-tools-parallel-ai-coding-agents/ "Best tools for parallel AI coding agents") and [best Claude Code alternatives](/en/blog/best-claude-code-alternatives/ "Best Claude Code alternatives").

[Download AgentVera](/en/download/ "Download AgentVera") and try two agents on the same task in two worktrees.

## Bottom line

- Want the Cursor experience from another vendor: **Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf)** or **Kiro**.
- Want stock VS Code back: **GitHub Copilot** or **Cline**.
- Want a fast editor that hosts many agents: **Zed**.
- Want the strongest agent and do not mind a terminal: **Claude Code** or **Codex**, depending on which plan you already pay for.
- Want any model, cheaply: **Aider** or **Cline** with your own keys.
- Want to keep Cursor and add others: run them side by side in **AgentVera**.

Whatever you pick, put your rules in `AGENTS.md` first. Then the next switch costs you nothing.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the best Cursor alternative?** It depends on what you liked about Cursor. For an editor with an agent built in, GitHub Copilot in VS Code, Windsurf (now Devin Desktop), Zed and Kiro are the closest. For a stronger agent in the terminal, Claude Code and Codex are the usual picks. For bring-your-own-key setups, Cline and Aider.

**Is there a free alternative to Cursor?** Yes, several. As of October 2026, Zed’s Personal plan is free and runs external agents at no charge from Zed, Cline and Aider are free and you pay only your model provider, and GitHub Copilot and Kiro both have free tiers with limited usage. Codex is included in ChatGPT Free with usage limits.

**Is Windsurf still available?** Yes, under a new name. Cognition renamed Windsurf to Devin Desktop, and windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai. The editor runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and you can import your VS Code or Cursor settings during setup.

**Can I use Claude Code instead of Cursor?** Yes. Claude Code is a terminal agent, so you pair it with any editor, including VS Code, JetBrains or Cursor itself. You lose inline tab completion from Cursor, but you get Anthropic’s own harness for Claude models, hooks, skills and subagents. Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan or an API key.

**Can I keep Cursor and use another agent next to it?** Yes. Cursor CLI runs as a terminal command (agent, or cursor-agent on older installs), so it can run next to Claude Code or Codex. Give each agent its own git worktree and keep shared rules in AGENTS.md so both follow the same instructions.
