# A tmux alternative for running Claude Code in parallel

tmux is a free, open-source (ISC) terminal multiplexer: several terminals on one screen, split into windows and panes, that keep running after you detach. Many people run several Claude Code or Codex sessions in tmux panes, and Claude Code’s agent teams can show teammates in tmux split panes. AgentVera keeps real terminals but puts them in a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, with a Git panel, flows and checks around them.

| Feature | tmux | AgentVera |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Platforms | OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Linux, macOS and Solaris. No native Windows build; on Windows it runs inside WSL. | macOS, Windows and Linux desktop app. |
| Supported agents | Any terminal program, so any CLI agent; tmux itself knows nothing about agents. Claude Code’s agent teams can use tmux for split panes. | 18 CLI coding agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Copilot, Cursor Agent, opencode, Amp and Aider, plus plain terminals. Each uses its own CLI install and login. |
| Open source / license | Open source, ISC license (about 50k GitHub stars). | Closed source. |
| Pricing model | Free. | Free plan with unlimited agents; Pro and Team plans are paid. |
| Git worktrees | Not built in. You create worktrees with git and open a window or pane in each. | Yes. Create a worktree per task from the Git panel and start an agent in it; night-shift tasks get their own worktree. You are warned when two agents edit the same file. |
| Kanban | Not confirmed on their own pages | Team kanban shared across your organization; hand a card to Claude, Codex or another agent and the reply lands on the card (Pro and Team). |
| Flows and pipelines between agents | Not confirmed on their own pages | Flows pass one agent’s output to the next; a team view of open agents led by a manager; a parallel team that ends in one PR; staged task line; night shift (Pro and Team). |
| Acceptance checks | Not confirmed on their own pages | Verify extracts acceptance criteria from your request and a separate read-only verifier checks each one after the agent’s turn; automatic code review. |
| Database manager / SSH | Not confirmed on their own pages | Database manager for PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB and SQLite (Pro and Team); SSH/SFTP panel; agent SSH and database access with your rules. |
| Token savings | Not confirmed on their own pages | Context profiles, automatic /compact, bundled RTK output compression, automatic per-task model routing and a project map (code graph) for agents. |
| Team features | Not confirmed on their own pages | Organizations, team kanban, client boards, AgentVera Runner on your own server, automatic account switching. |

**When to pick tmux:**

- You live in the terminal, want everything on the keyboard and like a config you can tune line by line.
- You work on servers over SSH and want sessions that keep running after you disconnect, to reattach later.
- You want the lightest setup: one small, free, open-source tool that runs any CLI.

**When to pick AgentVera:**

- You want a GUI: a grid per project, panes you drag, a Git panel with diffs and an approval queue that shows which agent is waiting.
- You are on Windows and want a native app rather than WSL.
- You want worktrees, flows between agents, acceptance checks and automatic code review built in, not scripted by hand.
- You want to approve requests from your phone, through Telegram or the AgentVera mobile app.

**Moving from tmux to AgentVera:**

1. Download AgentVera and open the repository you work on as a project.
2. Add one agent for each tmux pane you used to run; AgentVera starts the same installed CLIs with their logins.
3. Pick a grid for the project (up to 5×4); the layout and pane placement are remembered per project.
4. Find earlier Claude Code or Codex conversations with conversation search, which reads the CLIs’ local logs, and resume them in a new agent.

- **How do I run several Claude Code sessions at once without tmux?** Open the project in AgentVera and add several Claude Code agents. Each runs in its own real terminal pane, in its own git worktree if you want, and the approval queue shows which one is waiting for you.
- **Does tmux work on Windows?** tmux lists OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Linux, macOS and Solaris; there is no native Windows build, so on Windows it is used inside WSL. AgentVera has native builds for Windows, macOS and Linux.
- **Do I need tmux for AgentVera?** No. Each agent runs in a real terminal inside the app; besides the agent CLIs there is nothing else to install.
- **Do my agents keep running when I quit AgentVera?** No. Terminals close cleanly when you quit, and next time every agent except plain terminals returns to its conversation from its CLI’s local history. For sessions that must survive a disconnect on a server, tmux is the better tool.
- **Is AgentVera open source like tmux?** No. AgentVera is a closed-source desktop app with a free plan. tmux is open source under the ISC license.
